The fjord is the programme

Everything here starts from our own shore: heat, water, oars and old paths. No queues, no buses, no schedule unless you want one.

Bakka Sauna

All yearUp to 6 peopleBook via Periode

A wood-panelled sauna at the end of the pier, with a panorama window on the fjord and a ladder straight into the water. Book it privately or by the seat, at least an hour ahead — it heats itself automatically, so it is ready when you are. Towel required inside; the entry is shallow, so climb in rather than dive. Bakka Sauna has a page of its own.

  • Private sauna: 1,250 NOK per hour online — 1,000 at reception

Canoes, SUPs and motorboats

May – SeptLife jackets includedBook at reception

The water outside the tents is the calmest part of the day — especially in the morning, before the light breeze. Rent a canoe for the day, a SUP for three hours or the whole day — or take one of our small motorboats and spend a half or full day as your own fjord captain, with waterfalls you can steer right up to.

  • Canoe (3 adults, or 2 + 2 children): 600 NOK per day
  • SUP: 300 NOK for 3 hours, 600 for the day
  • Motorboat: 1,300 NOK half day, 2,300 for the day — 10 L of fuel included
  • Life jackets for adults and children included

Guided fjord tours

On requestSmall groups

A boat trip with someone who grew up here is a different fjord: the waterfalls you would row past, the farms with no road, where the porpoises show up, and which cliff hides the afternoon sun. We also tell of life on the fjord when the boat was the number-one way to travel, and of a time when these small villages were full of people and work — today they stand empty for much of the year. Tours are small and personal — tell us who you are and what you are curious about, and we will suggest a route.

  • One hour on the fjord: 1,500 NOK for up to 4 — then 100 per person, max 8 guests

The Royal Post Road, by boat and on foot

All year5.2 km one way · ~2 hoursBy boat from our dock

Across the fjord from Bakka runs the old post road between Styvi and Bleiklindi — part of the mail route between Bergen and Oslo. The post normally travelled by boat, but from late autumn into April ice could close the inner fjord: the mail was landed at Styvi, carried on foot to Bleiklindi, then taken over the ice to Bakka, where the cart road ran on to Gudvangen. The path still follows the shoreline on handsome old stonework — embankments, culverts, the wooden bridge along the cliff at Galdane — past hay meadows with grazing animals in summer. Gentle enough for the whole family: 5.2 km one way, about 187 m of climbing, two unhurried hours.

We run you over from our own dock, two ways. Boat to Bleiklindi, walk to Styvi and back to your pickup — about 10 km — for 600 NOK up to 4 people, then 50 per person. Or walk it one way and be collected at the far end — 1,200 NOK up to 4, then 100 per person.

Rimstigen

May – Oct4.4 km return · ~3 hours725 m ascent — steep

The trail starts a few hundred metres from your tent, on the road towards Tufto, and climbs — old, direct and relentless — under Bakkanosi and Rimstigfjellet. It is the first stretch of the pack road that once carried animals and loads over the mountain to Breidalen; today it is the viewpoint people come for. After 2.7 km and 725 vertical metres the fjord lies bent beneath you, and the last stretch is built stone steps — best taken on your feet, not your hands. Keen legs can continue along the ridge to Breiskrednosi at 1,189 metres. Or make it the big one: carry on all the way to the roadless village of Dyrdal — the route many know as the World Heritage Trail, a magnificent full-day hike — and we pick you up by boat in Dyrdal, turning the whole thing into a round trip. Sturdy shoes, water, a look at the weather — and know that at high water the waterfall spray drifts onto the path, and that the slope is avalanche country in winter and early spring.

Easy walk

The old road to Gudvangen

April – November~4 km one wayFlat — walk or cycle

Where the cars disappear into the tunnel, the old road keeps going outside — kept in good condition for walking and cycling, with the fjord at your side the whole way. From spring to autumn we recommend it in almost any weather short of a storm. In winter — roughly December to March — avalanches cross the old road, and even old avalanche snow is hard and slippery and runs straight to the fjord, so stay off it then. At the Gudvangen end: restaurants, the Viking Valley village and the quay where the fjord boats leave for Flåm and Kaupanger — so the walk can be an errand, a day trip or just the evening round.

Snow on the shore of the Nærøyfjord at Bakka on a clear winter day

Winter

Ski by day, fjord by night

Cabin open all yearMyrkdalen 38 kmSki touring in Jordalen

Myrkdalen, with some of the most reliable snow in Western Norway, is 38 km up the road — about 45 minutes. Ski tourers head for Jordalen, the mountain valley above Gudvangen, and skin up from the valley floor. Then comes the part no ski town can offer: an evening back at a still winter fjord, sauna on the pier, and the quiet of nine neighbours. The cabin is open all year — check the winter road notes before you travel.

An evening walk

The farm and the village

Any timeFlat and short

Bakka is small enough to learn by heart in an evening: the white church from 1859 next door, boathouses, goats with opinions, and the road that simply stops one farm further on. Walk to the end of it after dinner — that is usually when the fjord goes still.

The zero-emission fjord cruise

Electric sightseeing boats run between Flåm and Gudvangen through the narrowest part of the World Heritage fjord — since 2026 zero-emission sailing is the main rule here — the largest ships have until 2032, and a few older vessels hold temporary exemptions until shore power is ready. norwaysbest.com

Leave no trace

The World Heritage rules of the trail, short version: carry out everything you carry in — disposable grills and wet wipes included. Open fires are banned 15 April – 15 September, except at the established fire spots at the water's edge. Keep dogs leashed and close the gates behind you. Stay on the marked path, skip the shortcuts — and leave the old cairns alone; they are older than the postcards. None of this is camp policy — it is how the whole fjord lives: everyone here needs a permit for nearly everything, from a shed to a single tree, and the forests themselves are protected — which is why our line on fires is firmer than the national rule.
