Getting here
The end of the road
Four kilometres past Gudvangen, the road runs out of places to go. That is where we are. Here is how to arrive relaxed.

By car
From the E16 at Gudvangen
Leave the E16 at Gudvangen and follow the signs for Bakka onto Fv 241, Bakkavegen. You pass the ferry dock and the stone works, drive through the lit Bakka tunnel — 1.7 km — and the road then simply follows the shore until the reception appears on your right. About 4 km in all; allow 8 unhurried minutes. The address is Bakkavegen 35, 5747 Gudvangen, and the campsite is obvious when you arrive: it is the shore.
The narrow road
Six things that make the drive easy
- The laneSingle-lane with passing places. Use them generously, and reversing a few metres is normal here — no drama.
- The tunnelThe Bakka tunnel is 1.7 km and lit. The traffic light outside belongs to the frost gates, which close in freezing weather so the water inside cannot ice over — on red, simply wait for the gate. On foot or by bike you skip the tunnel entirely — the old road runs outside, along the fjord.
- The localsGoats, sheep and a few Highland cattle treat the road as theirs. In practice they have right of way.
- Vehicle sizeThe Tine milk lorry collects here all year — the road asks for a calm driver, not a shorter vehicle. First trip in a rented campervan? Call us and we'll talk you through it.
- TimingArrive after 14:00 if you can — departures are done by noon and the road is at its emptiest. Book ahead and the late arrival costs nothing: summer nights sell out.
- The lorriesThe milk lorry and the goods lorry keep the village running all year. If you meet one, pull in and let the professional work.

Without a car
Train, bus and your own feet
Take the Bergen line to Voss and the bus along the E16 to Gudvangen — or the Flåm railway to Flåm and the fjord boat from there. From Gudvangen it is a flat 4 km to us: where cars use the tunnel, walkers and cyclists follow the old road outside, along the water. Many guests call it the best part of the journey.
By water
Arriving by boat or kayak
There is a guest dock by the sauna, and kayaks land on the shore. Sightseeing boats and the ferry pass through the fjord but do not stop at Bakka — the nearest quay is Gudvangen, with boat connections to Flåm, Kaupanger and beyond, and the old-road walk from there. Tell us you are coming by water and we will point you to the dock.
November – April
Winter and the cabin
The campsite sleeps in winter, but the cabin is open all year. After heavy snowfall or an avalanche warning the road can close for a day or two; we follow it closely and keep cabin guests informed before arrival. And leave the old road outside the tunnel alone in winter — avalanches cross it; save that walk for spring. If you like to check for yourself: the weather at Gudvangen on yr.no, avalanche bulletins on varsom.no (region Voss) and road status on vegvesen.no.

Questions about getting here
Can I come in a 9-metre motorhome?
Yes — the Tine milk lorry collects from the farms here all year, and it is bigger than you. What the road asks for is not a shorter vehicle but a calm driver: single-lane, passing places, the odd bit of reversing. If this is your first trip in a rented campervan, call us — we will tell you the quiet hours and how the locals drive it. Honestly: not a walk in the park, and very worth it.
Is there a bus to Bakka?
No — buses stop in Gudvangen. The last 4 km are a flat walk or cycle: the old road outside the tunnel is kept in good condition and hugs the fjord the whole way. Or arrange fjord transport with us in advance.
Can I charge my electric car?
Yes, by the boathouse at the campsite. Fast chargers are available along the E16.
Is the road open in winter?
Usually yes — it is the village's only road. It can close for a day or two after heavy snow or an avalanche warning; cabin guests get an update from us before arrival.
